Thymer – manage your tasks

Thymer is a powerful but simple web application that will certainly make you more productive. I’m a big fan of webware that deal with productivity. Since I have a very weak memory, I’m always setting tasks, sending myself reminders and puting things down at my Palm. But can an online application work better than something that fits your pocket?

After receiving a thumbs up from Mashable, Thymer is about to be reviewed by Anggackt, and soon you’ll also get an interview I’m working on with the guys at Stunf, the company behind Thymer. They have just moved out of beta.

1. Landing page

thymer landing page

Thymer’s landing page is clear, and I always enjoy clear backgrounds without lines, limits or fancy things. Just content. (Just like my Gmail customized theme looks like. No? OK) And even tough this start page does an awesome job in selling the product, it lacks two things, and very important ones: I can’t find out how much it costs easily. There is no “pricing” link and not any information about that on the home page. You can learn about plans after clicking at  ”Sign up now!”, but that’s the last thing I’ll do when I’m meeting a product. Thymer has a free plan for individuals that lets you add up to four projects. Besides, it’s hard for a returning user to find his way around logging in. The “login” link is down there, beside “help”. Pretty close to the last line of the page. Also, there is no “remember me” option. Hard way, each time you visit the tool.

2. Product

I love big fonts. Once my sister told me that it’s easier to learn math once you draw big numbers. Everything in Thymer slides, clicks and fits perfectly. You can feel how you flow easily when managing your tasks. Thymer’s home page says it’s “Project management and task planning for people who hate project management and task planning” and it’s really what I see on Thymer: something made easy. The main page shows you a summary of all your tasks, and color tags let you understand easily where your tasks belong. (There is an interesting exercise about how easier it is to use colors instead of simple text here).

creating a project

The screen that allows you to create a new project is quite interesting. Not too many fields, nor a complicated thing to understand. What I also like in Thymer is that it’s very fast. Thymer gives you powerful tools not only to organize your tasks, but to manage and find your way around them. Search, individual projects, recurrence and even tags (However, tags aren’t searchable).

editing a task

3. Collaboration.

That’s not all. You can also mark your tasks with four symbols: “waiting for”, “discuss”, “billable” and “important”. That’s part of the collaboration tools that Thymer makes available to you. As a reviewer, I was using the free plan. However, I tried to get to the trial so I could take a better look at the collaboration tools, but it’s just not there. The free plan doesn’t allow you to invite anyone to join you in a project.

collaboration marks

This signals are very related and easy to understand, and stay clear. Although this is also not a tool that could be used in search. Advanced search commands would be awesome here to find tasks already marked as done that are necessary. Filtering trough tasks tagged or marked. Marking a task as “discuss” would be a way to ask your partners to give their opinions and talk about the task. This is where another awesome feature of Thymer comes in: commenting. Looking like  a comment thread from a blog post, the comments allow work partners to talk.

adding comments4. Conclusion

Thymer is awesome. Try it, buy it. You won’t regret. It’s a good tool for someone busy who doesn’t want to spend any money just to manage some tasks and an awesome tool to a company who wants to make a good investment. However, I’ll stick to my Palm. If I ever buy an iPhone (Yes! An iPhone version is coming), maybe I’ll get back to it. I just can’t put my laptop in my pocket.

Thymer makes it easier then it ever was. I tried a lot of applications for task management, from the dead-simple  Google Tasks to the ones I can’t remember about. Thymer is, by far, my favorite.
