“Sometimes I feel like being in the middle of a highway. Everybody sharing most of the time and nobody really listening.”

We interviewed Marcos, from Layers. You can learn more about their product at our review, their website or reading below. Layers is a service that allows you to place text, images and videos on a webpage.

Anggackt: What is Layers?
Marcos: Layers is the possibility to transform and enrich the web by their audience. People will have different motivations: self-expression, communication, let other see the web through their minds, but they will always like to have somebody who watch their creations. That’s why layers has implemented a social network too.

Anggackt: What is Layers’ history?
Marcos: 1 year ago a friend of mine gave me a paper to read. I highlighted it and made some comments and shared it with him lately. Then I thought: why couldnt not this be done on the web? I realized something that has been in front of us since the web began: a webpage is like a book from the library that you wont ever write on. I immediately wanted to change that situation. That’s why I founded Layers.

Anggackt: Layers claims to introduce the vertical web. What is the vertical web?
Marcos: I believe that the vertical dimension of a web site is its audience. We coined that concept because we believe that it’s the path the web will follow for the next years. Web 2.0 websites are the ones who have realized about this earlier but any website can become a vertical web if they integrate technologies like our one. It will be a mix of a wiki, ugc and a social network. Embracing this kind of vision will increase the value of a website.

Anggackt: In layers we can enrich ready content. What to do you think is more important (not for the service, but for the end user): the content or the incremental videos and notes that users can add?
Marcos: I think it is more important something today is difficult to achieve: get contrast about something (information density) and get involved in a real conversation. I feel that there’s no real conversation out there. I love tools like Twitter and Facebook , but sometimes I feel like being in the middle of a highway. Everybody sharing most of the time and nobody really listening. I read last week that it seems that people are using Facebook most of time to share and view photos… that’s great, but I repeat: I feel there’s no real conversation out there. Layers can empower social networks and websites in that way.

Anggackt: What features do you plan for Layers?
Marcos: Lots! :) We are going to focus on conversation, new apps, and privacy. For the next version we are going integrate layers with Facebook, Twitter and Orkut. We are going to create new apps (doodles, Google Maps, Flickr app, etc (as you can see, most web apps could be integrated into layers)). Private layers are the most demanded feature people are asking for and we are working on it. Our technology would be easily integrated into a blog or a publisher website so we are working also on creating the tools on our website to make them aware of this and use it.
We have many, many more new features but I can not disclose them yet.

Anggackt: What’s Layers’ current focus?
Marcos: Now is time for awareness. We need people using layers and spreading the word :) Feedback is also the most important issue for us right now, in order to plan our product roadmap and fix bugs.
Monetization will have to wait until next year, but unlike some services, we have a plan.

Anggackt: This is it. Thank you for your time.
Marcos: Thanks a lot to you Feen and to your anggackt.com team. It has been an honor for me that you wanted to interview me.

Thank you, Marcos, for the interview. Go check Layers out here.
