MyMemory – Machine + Human

October 4th, 2009 — 7:53am | Author : Anangga Pratama

MyMemory is a translation tools from translated.net that combined machine + human edited translation online. Think of it as Google Translate + Wikipedia article edit feature. Honestly, sometimes I feel that the machine-type translation engine could result to a  mistranslation to a certain phrase. Among two of the most used machine translation engine , Systran and Google Translate, none of them would perfectly translate one into another language, which is normal since it is machine powered.

So how is MyMemory “Cyborg” method could change the future of automated translation since they using Google Translate, Systran and Wordlingo as their machine translation engine ? We will find out soon.

I. Landing Page

MyMemory Landing Page

The landing page is pretty straight forward.  So I guess I don’t have anything else to complain. If you want to register and log-in, you will have to go to this page to register, which is hidden from their main page, another navigation nightmare commonly found in WebWare nowadays.

But relax, to start editing your translation, you won’t need an account, perhaps.. (read more below for an explanation for my hesitation in this statement).

II. Features

Just fired up your words or phrase, choose your designated language and click Search (translate) afterward, a standard flow for most translation engine.

MyMemory Result

The result screen is nice, it will gave you two type of translation, one is the machine powered translation and one is the human powered translation.

Let’s try to edit the human powered translation for this try-out, since the machine powered translation is completely wrong. Indonesian’s reader,  since my mark for Bahasa Indonesia was extremely low when I’m still in high school.

MyMemory Edit

MyMemory is pretty nice service, you will have a chance to choose between human powered translation or machine powered one. If you are an avid translator, you can also categorized your translation either globally or for specific subject translation (for an example : Mouse globally and Mouse in computer subject have different meaning). User can also vote a human powered translation to determine the quality of the translation. I also in love with the news ticker that indicating users that currently needs some help with some translation.

I pretty much confused my self when MyMemory doesn’t showed up my translated phrase if I re-search the same phrase. Is that means that there is a moderation for editing a translation ? or do I have to sign up first for editing a translation ? There is not enough information available on their About page, and there’s no FAQ either.

There is also another downside to this service, such as no entire web-page translation (which is acceptable regarding two type of translation and categorized translation) and not enough FAQ and help for first-timer translation contributor.

Overall, MyMemory could served as a second opinion for your translations, use it if you feel the machine based translation is not good enough and pray that someone already accurately translated that words or phrases in MyMemory.
