Sneebly – When 140 is too Much

October 2nd, 2009 — 7:34am | Author : Anangga Pratama

140 characters is way too much for Sneebly by providing a tiny 120 characters count. So what is Sneebly anyway ? Sneebly is a free “micro geo-blogging” site where you can post 120 or less character updates based on a set location. In other way, Twitter kind of service but added with a map in one single interface.

I. Landing Page

Sneebly Landing Page

Okay, I love simplicity, but not in Sneebly way. Take a clue at Whispurr, Lissn or Layers, that’s what I meant with simplicity. The greenish color is simply making a bad first look at Sneebly. I love doodles, but again, not in Sneebly way. I love the mascot though.

Enough with the interface design ranting, let’s move on to the registration phase which is standard. Register, email activation, you know your stuff. I think it’s better if there is at least one single connect, either it is with Facebook’s Connect or OpenID, since there are some people who just way too lazy to register manually again.

II.DashBoard & Features

Sneeblies

Here we are , at the dashboard. Don’t use the enter address features yet, it will not help you to update your status, its purpose is only to see who already Sneeblied in you area and read it. In this page, all that you can do is to see and read Sneeblies all around the world. To update your status and whereabouts, click the Status Update.

One question remained in my head, why do they have to separate those two page ? I’m a person who is willing to spend my entire time clicking things to learn something, but even with that characteristic, I find that Sneebly navigation work-flow is a nightmare. Especially to users from countries that have limited and slow internet access. Loading another page just to update your status is totally ineffective and imagine the loading time it took just to load the map and all the Sneeblies that available in that area!

But I have to admit, I love the drag and drop bunny.

Status Update

Another features is the standard for almost all micro-blogging services, such as but not limited to : Direct Messaging, Following and Followers.

Wait a second, I think I missed something…..Yes, there is no status update reply or comment or anything. How come commenting a status update is so important ? For an example, how can I try to prevent this guy (from the picture below)  from doing some criminal activities if I don’t have a chance to reply to his status update ? If I can reply, at least I know how to make him calmer rather than not paying attention just even a little bit to him, since a guy like this needs an attention, care and trust more than anything at his current labile state. Okay, I might be exaggerating the example a bit, but remember, a tiny fragment of  murder/suicide case in the world started from one source, Internet.

Direct messaging is no option, since people tend to stay at one page to see updates and comments rather than clicking and loading another page just to see a comment.

Sneeblies Reply

Sneebly, in my opinion is a little bit disappointing. Some people might find that this service is a joy to use, but not me. But then again, Sneebly is a newborn baby, who knows what Sneebly is going to be in the near future ? I might eat my own words when that day come.

Note : I do hope they added SMS update features and could automatically detect where the user position from their mobile device.
