Lissn – Live Twitter

September 18th, 2009 — 11:59pm | Author : Anangga Pratama

Another Twitter competitor in the future. What makes Lissn different from Twitter is that Lissn offers you a live conversation between you and your lissner through an ajaxed interface with one topic still intact for each conversation room.

What else Lissn is going to offer you ? let’s find out by doing a test directly at Lissn, and just hope that one of the developer team notice my Lissn and would given me a lot more insight view about what Lissn really is.

Lissn.com landing page

Lissn landing page is very humble, which is good. It makes the landing page loading time is a breeze among its main competitor.

After registration, you’ll be redirected to the dashboard, which again is very well designed. I like the color combination and the easy navigation Lissn offered. So far so good.

But my joy comes to an end when I tried to upload my transparent png as the profile picture which ended with a blackened avatar of me. A minus for lissn for not supporting fully transparent png. But hey, this is a new web app, it will grow up sooner or  later.

Now let’s see what Lissn’s main purpose is, Live conversation in a micro-blogging environment. Let’s start by making a conversation with a topic of well….testing out lissn.

starting a conversation

Hmm…no character limit for the conversation topic title or response or anything ? Still unknown since there is no help available anywhere in the site. But judging from response from another user, it seems like it got 140 characters limit. *Hint for character counter*

After done creating your conversation topic (or can I say, a new forum thread ala Lissn), you will be redirected to the conversation screen, where you may change your speaking balloon to a more detailed explaining your thread, or anything you want, just like an update, by writing to the psychologically unseen bar below and clicking send.

This bar has another feature of creating a speaking balloon too when written in another conversation room, as well as the transcript, it will do the history of the speaking balloon too. I still didn’t get what is the difference between a normal respond and creating a speaking balloon.

Maybe there will be a Lissn Premium where people with premium account could have a speaking balloon respond ? I don’t know, well I do hope there will be some explanation on this.

Lissn Conversation Room

Well, this web app is pretty new, so I believe there are some things that needed to be added or fixed. One of them is the availability of a feedback form. I prefer to write in a feedback form directly than clicking  the mailto: link on the website.

A search function is lacking , indeed Lissn gives you an opportunity to choose which category your Lissn is going to be posted, but a search button is still needed somewhere on this site. At least they indicated “Search” as a soon to be added feature judging from the tagging system they got on the Start Conversation screen.

And to tell you the truth, “Other” category is a really bad choice, because human tend to choose “Other” when confused in which category does one topic belongs to.

Lissn biggest win ? It’s Local based conversation, with an option ranging from 5 miles to 1000 miles from your current location. Now you can speak with your own language with the Local conversation option without the need of creating another account.

All in all, Lissn is a great web app with a great vision. But for now, Lissn needs to be tweaked so it can reach it’s full potential. It’s like a hybrid between Vanilla and Twitter if I may say. I would love to try this web app again when it’s reached it’s full potential.

Update : Link will not be automatically converted into a working link. I don’t really know the reason why.

Great article! I'm Myke from Lissn. You offered some good suggestions. I like your idea to allow users to upload transparent png's as user pictures. Per your suggestions we will be adding the png user pics, working links when links are posted. Our search feature we will be added within the next 2 months.

I will keep you updated as lissn is evolving every day, its going to changing quite a bit in the next few weeks :)

I appreciate the time you spent reviewing lissn and look forward to showing you what we add.

    Regards,
    Myke
